FEC Awards 2024 ECR Small Grant to ECOP Morocco Team

Future Earth Coasts (FEC) is delighted to announce the recipients of its 2024 “ECR Small Grant Program”. This initiative funds early career professionals who propose innovative projects to enhance the understanding and management of human activities and climate change impacts on estuarine and coastal regions.

This year saw a remarkable number of applications from highly qualified candidates. A selection committee comprising FEC Executive Committee members and Academy Members conducted a thorough review process to evaluate the submissions.

We are pleased to announce that the project ‘Capacity Building for Young Professional Researchers in Oceanography (Early Career Ocean Professionals – ECOP Morocco)’ has been awarded the 2024 FEC ECR Small Grant. Congratulations to Hind Azidane, Othman Cherkaoui Dekkaki, and Houda el Hadad on their successful application and for receiving this year’s FEC ECR Small Grant!

The newly awarded project not only showcases the innovative ideas of early career professionals but also strengthens the partnership between ECOP and FEC. This collaboration promises to foster a robust network for future research and initiatives in oceanography and coastal management. FEC is excited to see the contributions this project will make and looks forward to supporting their endeavors.

The Winning Project Summary

The project focuses on the establishment of Morocco’s inaugural national ECOP network. This network aims to mobilize Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) in Morocco to address critical ocean-related challenges. Planned activities include organizing conferences, seminars, workshops, and training sessions on the Ocean Decade within Morocco and internationally. The project will also involve scientific collaboration, research initiatives, and the dissemination of ocean-related knowledge through manuals, reviews, and books.

The project aims to bolster and nurture the diverse perspectives of emerging ocean professionals. By providing training, facilitating collaboration, and promoting awareness, the project seeks to empower ECOPs to contribute effectively to ocean and coastal sustainability. This is especially critical given the significant increase in human presence in marine and coastal regions driven by socio-economic progress, which has led to numerous challenges for the Moroccan Coasts.

Additionally, the project will promote ocean literacy and engage coastal communities through educational initiatives, fostering a culture of sustainability and responsible ocean resource management.

By focusing on capacity building and fostering a collaborative network, ECOP Morocco aims to make significant contributions to coastal sustainability, addressing issues such as overfishing, marine pollution, and climate change impacts, ultimately supporting the goals of the United Nations Ocean Decade.
