Marking the inaugural session of 2024, the FEC Fellows Session “Empowering Communities: Sustainable Energy and Climate Resilience” launched with enthusiasm, endeavoring to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among FEC early- to mid-career researchers. The session, held on May 13th, emphasized a collective commitment to addressing climate change challenges and fostering resilient communities.
Under the overarching theme of “Empowering Communities: Sustainable Energy and Climate Resilience,” the session delved into crucial topics concerning local adaptation to climate change and sustainable energy options. FEC fellows Dr. Devendraraj Madhanagopal and Dr. Surya Kumar Sapkota, delivered insightful presentations, shedding light on pressing issues and innovative solutions.
Dr. Madhanagopal’s presentation examined how traditional marine fishers in tsunami-affected South Indian coastal regions, notably the Pattinavar communities along the Coromandel Coast, adapt to climate change. He highlighted the intricate relationship between indigenous knowledge systems, sociocultural norms, and local adaptation responses to climate change. His research underscored the socio-political dimensions of adaptation and offered valuable insights applicable beyond the Indian shores.
Dr. Sapkota provided a comprehensive analysis of small-scale renewable energy options for electricity supply in coastal areas. Drawing from his expertise in renewable energy policy and planning, he discussed the selection and prioritization of key barriers, conducted techno-economic assessments, and evaluated the sustainability of existing renewable energy systems. His recommendations aimed at promoting accessible and sustainable energy solutions for coastal communities resonated with the session’s overarching goals.
With a mission to empower FEC researchers through strategic career development and networking, the FEC Fellows Session 2024 invites continued engagement and contributions. Stay tuned for future sessions, and for inquiries or to express interest in participating, please contact [email protected].
